Running Apps for iPhone 3G

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

As soon as Apple announced iPhone 3G would feature GPS support a mental image of Nike + iPod sans the iPod came to my mind. About a month after the arrival of the iPhone App Store the first applications to keep track of your running workout are available:

* Path Tracker is an inexpensive tool to map your route and speed. iTunes link

* iTrail also looks promising. iTunes link

* RunKeeper is more sophisticated (and expensive; $10/8€) but doesn’t display a map with your track on the iPhone 3G. Instead it features a web dashboard to access your workout history and a Google Map.

Vodafone on Tuesday announced official pricing and availability information for the iPhone in India, offering the device starting at an astonishing Rs 31,000 (~$715) for the 8GB model, or Rs 36100 (~$830) for the 16GB. Vodafone is offering potential customers a chance to own the device “before others do”, by placing a Rs 10,000 (~$230) deposit, allowing them to book a specific time for their purchase and setup for the launch on August 22nd.

Since India has not settled the auction of the 3G airwaves, Vodafone will be deploying the iPhone 3G on its GPRS network, but will still offer WiFi access and GPS connectivity.

The announcement comes ahead of official word from Bharti Airtel, India’s o

iPhone 3G sales hampered by Windows Mobile

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

By Prince McLean

Sources within Apple’s retail stores report that sales of the iPhone 3G are being slowed down by handhelds running Microsoft Windows Mobile/WinCE. That’s because the stores have been selling new iPhones to customers using the old EasyPay, a problematic Pocket PC handheld computer that’s causing employees lots of grief.

Apple began using the EasyPay devices in its retail stores in 2005. Ever since, management has been pushing to expand the use of the handheld systems, in part to deliver more personal service in stores commonly designed without a prominent check out area, as well as to provide flexibility in handling transactions for customers without requiring them to stand in checkout lines.

An initial report by Peter Burrows in BusinessWeek detailed Apple’s optimism for the devices back in 2005, explaining, “Steve Jobs believes that many people who are comfortable buying on-line — and that’s a rapidly growing percentage of the total — will not only accept but will actually prefer getting their receipts electronically. Also, the wireless, paperless checkout gives Apple an opportunity to improve in-store service, as well.”

iPhone 3G prices for India released by Vodaphone

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Confirming the rumours about the iPhone 3G prices in India, Vodaphone has released the price structure. And it’s as expensive as we thought it would be.

iPhone 3G will be available tomorrow - August 22nd at the following prices.

  • 8GB model - Rs 31,000 ($710)
  • 16GB model - Rs 36,100 ($820)

And this does not include the data and voice plan for iPhone 3G.

Vodaphone is urging anxious buyers to pre-register for the limited stock iPhone by paying Rs 10,000 in advance by cash or credit card. iPhone 3G will be available only at select Vodaphone stores.  By registering, you get an appointment with a date and time so you don’t have to wait in line.

Of course, you would have to have a Vodaphone connection or buy their service to purchase the iPhone.

iPhone 3G starting at $700 in India, lines to be nonexistent

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Though we can’t definitively say this will end up being the priciest iPhone 3G this side of eBay, there’s a good chance it will be. Word has it that Vodafone will be offering up Apple’s latest 8GB handset for a mind-boggling Rs 31,000 ($712), or Rs 36,100 ($830) for the 16 gigger. Why so serious high? Because neither Vodafone nor Airtel will subsidize the phone, and to add insult to injury, there’s not even a 3G highway up and running in India. Grey market operators to capitalize in T-minus 3, 2, 1…

Is Apple shooting in the dark to fix iPhone 3G issues?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Hopes were high that 2.0.2 would decisively crush the reception woes some iPhone 3G owners have experienced since taking delivery of their cracking beauties; dropped calls, latching onto EDGE reception when 3G (also known as “the good stuff”) is available, and general signal strength wonkiness have all plagued a select group of handsets since launch, making for a decidedly MobileMe-like user experience. Some upgraders are actually reporting just the opposite, though — for these lucky few, 2.0.2 seems to be making reception somehow worse than it already was, and what’s more, there are intermittent reports cropping up of broken third-party apps, too. With the 1.x line of builds having chugged along with relatively little drama for a year, here’s our question: what the hell is going on? Why does 2.0, after two post-launch builds, still feel like a beta? MobileMe took the lion’s share of the fall for Apple having spread itself too thin through the launch-heavy summer months, but did some of that fire-drill mentality trickle over to the breadwinner, too? Sound off in comments with your experiences putting 2.0.2 through its paces so far!

Update: Apparently Steve Jobs, who should have his face buried in a developer workstation somewhere in Cupertino slaving away on iPhone bug fixes, somehow found the time to slack off for half an hour and fire off an email to some guy who wrote him complaining about third-party apps that are crashing on startup. Jobs allegedly says that the issue is a “known iPhone bug” and that it’ll be fixed in the next update come September — but frankly, we wish he’d let his assistants attend to this sort of needless communication so he could get back to, you know, writing code and inventing phones. Thanks, Alexander!

Apple ‘iPhone 3G’ to be released in ‘20 more countries’ on August 22

Monday, August 11th, 2008

After the launch of Apple’s iPhone 3G in 21 countries around the world, the company has decided to launch the product in 20 more countries on August 22. Since its release, the product has been doing very good, but at times it has faced some problems specially in the US regarding the system activation.

Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, Romania and Uruguay will be handled by ‘America Movil’. ‘Telefonica’ will be looking after some of them.

AppleLatvia and Lithuania will get their hand on the product with the help of ‘TeliaSonera’. Globe Telecom and O2 will deliver the product in Philippines and the Czech Republic respectively.

T-Mobile and Orange will look after Slovakia. The prior will be looking after Hungary alone where as the later along with Era will take care of Poland.

TeliaSonera and EMT will be looking after Estonia. India will be handled by Vodafone and Bharti Airtel.

India is considered to be one of the big markets and will probably do business better than others. Its population is over 1 billion. Both the companies which will be looking after iPhone 3G’s distribution in India, contains a combined number of 118 million subscribers.

Over the next several months, Apple will be expanding its product in more than 70 countries.

iPhone 3G Now Readily Available In All Apple Stores

Monday, August 11th, 2008

As of 12:30 AM Eastern time today, all 190 Apple stores in the United States showed iPhone 3G’s in stock. So if you’ve been waiting to buy your 3G, now is the time. However, just because all Apple stores refilled their inventory, don’t think the same regarding AT&T. AT&T stores are still keeping their shelves pretty scarce while trying to fill the massive amounts of iPhone 3G back orders.

So if you’ve had the “I want an iPhone 3G but I don’t wanna stand in line or wait for weeks” mentality, then this is your moment.
