Apple Wants To Make Jailbreaking Worthy Of Jail Time, $2500 Fine

March 23rd, 2009 No Comments

iphone The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has petitioned the Library of Congress to officially protect phone owners who bypass software restrictions on their phones—aka “jailbreaking.” Apple has just filed an objection, arguing that doing so would infringe on their copyright. If Apple gets its way,

would have the right to claim statutory damages of up to $2,500 “per act of circumvention.” People who jailbreak phones, might even be subject to criminal penalties of as long as five years, if they circumvented copyright for a financial gain.

The big question, of course, is who really owns your damned phone? Apple says that bypassing their software restrictions messes with the “chain of trust” they’ve set up and screws up their “ecosystem.” The EFF counters that if you apply Apple’s argument to another industry, it falls apart:

Iphone 3.0 update previewed

March 23rd, 2009 1 Comment

APPLE PREVIEWED FORTHCOMING CHANGES to its mobile operating system yesterday and it appears that the Cupertino company has been listening to its developers and users.

Apple has added over 1000 new APIs to the software developer kit (SDK), most of which address shortcomings in previous releases, as well as over 100 new features which will appear at release time.

Here’s a brief run-down of the major new additions. You can watch the full 90-minute keynote here, but we wouldn’t recommend it (yawn).

Running Apps for iPhone 3G

November 6th, 2008 No Comments

As soon as Apple announced iPhone 3G would feature GPS support a mental image of Nike + iPod sans the iPod came to my mind. About a month after the arrival of the iPhone App Store the first applications to keep track of your running workout are available:

* Path Tracker is an inexpensive tool to map your route and speed. iTunes link

* iTrail also looks promising. iTunes link

* RunKeeper is more sophisticated (and expensive; $10/8€) but doesn’t display a map with your track on the iPhone 3G. Instead it features a web dashboard to access your workout history and a Google Map.

November 6th, 2008 No Comments

About Wide Mail Keyboard

Wide Mail Keyboard is an iPhone/iPod touch web app which allows you to comfortably write e-mails using a wide keyboard with larger buttons while holding your device in landscape orientation which isn’t currently supported by Apple’s Mobile Mail application.

Instructions

Using Wide Mail Keyboard is simple: Just load the web app and hold your iPhone or iPod touch in landscape orientation. Tap the text field and start writing your e-mail. When you are done writing tap the Done button on the keyboard. Your text will be automatically saved to a cookie every second if you’ve selected the auto save checkbox.

You can now read your text by scrolling the text field with two fingers. When you’re satisfied with the result just tap Send to Mail and the Mail application on your device does the rest.
