Emails claiming to offer recipients the iPhone 4G for free are actually scam messages designed to steal personal information.

According to security firm Sophos, the emails ask for volunteers to try out the new Apple device – before it’s even been released – and then promise these testers they can keep it afterwards.

But clicking the link in the message takes victims to a website that has nothing to do with the iPhone and is actually designed to steal your email address and banking details.

Cybercriminals are exploiting the fact that many people want to get their hands on this device after pictures of it were released, without Apple’s knowledge, across the net.

Only this week, a video of what appears to be the iPhone 4G has appeared from a Vietnamese source.

Security is so tight around the model that the editor of tech blog Gizmodo’s house was raided after he claimed to have got hold of a prototype.
